World War II Trooper Ernest Harold Hawn

World War II Trooper Ernest Harold Hawn, 94 passed away on December 24, 2016 at Frye Regional Medical Center, watched over by his son, Jerry.

Harold, as he was known to his friends, was born in Maiden, NC on December 4, 1922, son of the late Ernest Alexander Hawn and Evie Hewitt Hawn. He was a longtime resident of Hickory, living at Kingston Residence of Hickory for the last 10 years. He had a long professional career in education and was a veteran who served our country in World War II. A graduate of Maiden High School, he also received a BA from Wake Forest University and a MA from Vanderbilt University, and completed coursework for a MA in guidance and counseling at Appalachian State University. He was a gunner and a radio operator in a light tank in General George Patton’s Third U. S. Army. His Second Cavalry Regiment participated in fire battle zones in the European campaigns of General Dwight Eisenhower. For a number of years, he taught high school English and French in local school systems including Chinquapin, Marion, and Valdese. He also worked as a guidance counselor at St. Stephens High School and Fred T. Foard High School. Finally, he finished his career as a counselor and Director of Admission of the Catawba Valley Community College, in Hickory, NC. In addition to his professional career, Harold had many interests and hobbies. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, in Hickory, where he served at different times as a junior high Sunday School teacher, chairman of the Worship Work area, member of the chancel choir, and president of the Senior Adult Goforth Club. Following retirement, he also traveled extensively with tour groups throughout Europe and enjoyed painting in oils and watercolors. In the last few years of his life, when not going on trips with his son, Jerry, he was an active member of the community at Kingston.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia, to whom he was married for 34 years; brothers, Clyde and Craig; and brother-in-law, Leon Drum.

Harold is survived by son, Jerry Hawn and wife Jane of Alexandria, VA; brothers, Ray Hawn and wife Emma, Howard Hawn and wife Jeanette; sister Mary Faye Drum; sister-in-law, Juanita Hawn all of Maiden area; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Kennie Shuford of Hickory, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service was held on Friday, December 30, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Hickory with Rev. Paul Christy officiating.
